At five-thirty Holly sat in Jake’s car, being taken to goodness knows where. She twisted the earring around in her lobe, staring out at the passing traffic. Max had called to demand an update, which had forced her to acknowledge their plans for the ball. When he’d sneered, “How noble,” it gave her a small perverse satisfaction to say swiftly, “I have work to do. Gotta go,” and hang up on him.

Thankfully the ball preparations had then commanded her thoughts elsewhere, away from Max, from her situation. The Blackstones had placed an almighty trust in her by revealing Jake’s identity, given the tenuous grip they had with privacy right now. How could she possibly destroy that trust?

Worry sawed at her composure, leaving her raw and confused. She needed to stall Max until after the ball, after she’d proven her loyalties lay with Blackstone’s. Only then could she come clean and get rid of the menacing threat hanging over her head.

She glanced at a silent Jake…James. James Blackstone. Sheer amazement had waylaid her at inopportune times during the day. She’d wanted to ask him a dozen questions but hadn’t seen him since their press release discussion. Of course he had other things to do, important meetings to attend, small countries to buy out. He wasn’t avoiding her.

At least, now he wasn’t.

“Tell me again why I couldn’t just catch a cab home?” she said as the peak-hour traffic crawled by.

“You saw the reporters outside Blackstone’s.” She wasn’t sure if his sympathetic glance was real or a put-on. “As my rumoured love interest, you are news now.”

“And me in your car helps how? You have read that little article on page ten of today’s Telegraph, haven’t you?”

He waved away her concern with an imperious hand. “We both know you’re not having my baby. Unless—” his eyes turned mischievous “—you want to.”

She blinked, cramming down the sudden fluttering desire that flared in her belly. “Jake…”

“Relax, Holly.” He dismissed her shocked look. “You want my undivided attention for this press release. I’m giving it to you.”

Fifteen minutes later, passing through no less than two security gates that required key card and password access, then another keypad at the complex doors, Holly stood in the middle of Jake’s elaborate Pyrmont Bay apartment in silent awe. As if sensing her keen interest from the moment she walked in, he’d given her the cook’s tour. From the entrance she stepped into an open-plan living area featuring a large fireplace at the far end flanked by two curved couches. To her left was the modern kitchen. His office space was separated by a glass wall. She’d walked down the two steps to the sunken entertainment area, which boasted a massive plasma screen and two single reclining lounge chairs. Beyond ceiling-to-floor windows, a balcony offered a magnificent view of Pyrmont Bay and Darling Harbour.

To her relief he’d nodded to the staircase and said, “Bedroom, spare room and bathroom.”

She looked around. The place simply screamed rich single guy. She didn’t even notice that Jake had turned on the TV until she saw her face plastered on the six-o’clock news.
